In 2013, Latin America Will Be #2 in the World in Digital Ad Spend

According to new projections from eMarketer, in 2013 online ad spend in Latin America will grow by 23%, more than any other region in the world except for the Middle East. And although Brazil remains the region’s largest online market, Mexico will lead Latin America in online ad spend growth in 2013: the country will post an increase of 32.1% in digital ad spend. Argentina will be in second place in 2013, growing by 30% in online ad spend, while Brazil will grow by 20%.

Emarketer also notes that in 2012, these three markets grew robustly in their online ad spend: Mexico’s 2012 online ad spend grew by 34%, while the online ad spend of Brazil and Argentina in 2012 grew by 40% in each country.

That said, online’s share of overall ad spend in Latin America will not grow as robustly. In 2012, online’s share of ad spend was 9.7% in Latin America and eMarketer projects online’s share of overall ad spend will reach 14% in Latin America by 2016. In contrast, online’s share of ad spend in North America will go from 22% in 2012 to 29% in 2016. Of course, the obvious reason for this is the stark difference in Internet penetration between the two regions: 40% for Latin America and 78% for North America.

Despite this, several factors could cause online’s ad spend share in Latin America to grow faster than projected. First, it’s projected that Internet penetration in the region will reach 60% by 2015, resulting in 359 million Internet users in Latin America, a gain of 127 million compared to the amount in 2012. In addition, e-commerce continues to grow spectacularly in Latin America: it grew by 44% in Argentina in 2012, by 40% in Mexico in 2012 and is projected to grow by 28% in Brazil during 2013. And 2012 statistics from e-bit indicated that 65% of Chilean Internet users shop online.  This affects online advertising because both search and banner advertising influence the purchases of Latin American online shoppers. Finally, as both mobile and social media increase their reach in Latin America, advertisers will need to increase their spend in these areas to continue to reach their customers.

Latin America’s Ad Spend Is Set to Skyrocket

According to projections from e-Marketer, between 2012 and 2016, Latin America will be one of the world’s fastest-growing regions when it comes to ad spend.

Total ad spend for Latin America is projected to reach US$34 billion in 2012 and grow to US$51 billion by 2016, 50% growth. In terms of rate of growth, Latin America and Asia-Pacific will grow the fastest in ad spend between 2012 and 2016.

E-marketer also notes that online ad spend will spike in all of the world’s markets, particularly in China, which is set to become the world’s #2 market in online ad spend by 2014. Latin America is set to register $3.62 billion in online ad spend in 2012. By 2016, Latin America’s online ad spend will be $7.68 billion, a 112% increase in just 4 years.

These numbers seem to be in line with those from other sources. For example, eMarketer projects 11.8% growth in ad spend for Latin America during 2012, while recently MagnaGlobal projected 13% growth for this year. In addition, a variety of sources have noted increases in ad spend and online ad spend in Latin America.

To get a sense of the growth trend, here’s a look at ad spend and online spend figures for major markets in Latin America in 2011.

• Argentina: 31.6% growth in overall ad spend in 2011, 117% growth in online ad spend for 2011
• Brazil: 8.5% growth in overall ad spend in 2011, 20% growth in online ad spend in 2011, 39% projected growth in online ad spend for 2012
• Chile: 10.4% increase in overall ad spend in 2011, 30% growth in online ad spend in 2011
• Colombia: 8.8% increase in overall ad spend in 2011, 33% increase in online ad spend
• Mexico: 36% increase in online ad spend in 2011
• Panama: 7.7% increase in overall ad spend in 2011
• Peru: 16% increase in overall ad spend in 2011, 37% increase in online ad spend in 2011
• Uruguay: 7% increase in overall ad spend in 2011, 50% increase in online ad spend in 2011
• Venezuela: 7.8% increase in overall ad spend in 2011

Online Ad Spend Skyrockets All Over Latam

While other countries can’t boast Brazil’s doubling of online ad spend in 2011, they’re actually not that far behind.
It’s projected that Mexico will join Brazil in having its online ad spend reach 10% of the country’s overall ad spend in 2011. This marks an increase of 3% compared to 2010, when online’s share of total ad spend was at 7%. This surge comes on top of Mexico’s 35% growth in online ad spend between 2009 and 2010, when it reached 3.3 million pesos ($273 million).
While Mexico’s 35% increase in online ad spend is impressive, other Latam markets are also heating up in this area:

  • Argentina: 50% increase in online ad spend in 2010, 27% projected increase in 2011
  • Chile: 29% increase in online ad spend in 2010, 35% projected increase in 2011
  • Colombia: 56% increase in online ad spend in 2010, 40% projected increase in 2011
  • Peru: 44% increase in online ad spend in 2010, 40% projected increase in 2011
  • Uruguay: 40% increase in online ad spend in 2010, (no 2011 projections available yet)

Total online ad spend in Latin America is also on the way up. Zenith Optimedia projects that it will grow by 14.4% in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Where the Money Is Going
In many countries, display banners still rule. They make up 70% of the digital ad spend in Chile, 83% of the digital ad spend in Colombia, 61% of the digital ad spend in Mexico and 50% of the digital ad spend in Argentina. Search advertising is relatively low in many Latin American countries when you consider how it dominates the online activities of many users. For example, a recent comScore study shows that as an activity search grew 34% in Brazil between March 2010 and March 2011. In the same period, it grew by 23% in Mexico, by 28% in Colombia and by 21% in Argentina.
Among the growth categories are social media (106% in Mexico in 2010) and online video. In fact, an IAB Uruguay study suggests that advertisers will spend more than 25% of their budgets on online video ads.

Factors Behind the Surge
Obviously, improved infrastructure has made a huge difference. The region’s hot economies are also playing a role. With better purchasing power, more people can connect by either buying computers or connecting via their smartphones. And in Brazil, LAN houses have opened up Internet access for class C consumers.
But beyond physical and economic factors, what’s important to note is the Internet’s role in purchasing decisions. comScore’s 2010 study on Latin American e-commerce reported that 97% of Argentine Internet users go online to research products before buying. The same pattern was found among users  in Brazil (87%), Mexico (91%), Chile (90%), Colombia (94%) and Peru (91%). This suggests strongly that advertising online to drive retail traffic is a strategy that will yield rewarding ROI.
